Classroom professional development program equips educators with tools and strategies to manage student behavior and proactively prevent problems in the classroom. Safe & Civil Schools offers various programs that address the classroom environment, our most comprehesive being CHAMPS.

Unlike programs that have set procedures, the CHAMPS model guides the teacher in making effective decisions about managing behavior. Teachers learn how to collect data to inform their decisions on classroom management and select strategies that best fit the needs of their own classroom. Teachers put an effective, positive classroom management plan into place by overtly teaching students how to behave responsibly and clearly communicating their expectations for every classroom activity and transition. CHAMPS reinforces a teacher’s current effective practices while providing additional strategies to encourage positive social interactions.

At its heart, the CHAMPS approach is designed to help teachers create and implement a classroom management plan that is proactive, positive, and instructional. Using practical strategies that set the stage for appropriate behavior, the teacher is able to focus on maintaining positive interactions. Students become more motivated and engaged in the classroom. This process improves the classroom dynamics by building a strong sense of classroom community.

Educators and the structure of the classroom environment significantly impact the lives of students. Educators have the ability to influence student behaviors and, most importantly, prevent disruptive behaviors by establishing effective classroom management strategies. The teacher’s approach to behavior in their classroom will have a direct impact on their students’ behavior.

Teacher acceptance of new classroom management initiatives is necessary, yet difficult unless the teachers feel ownership in the process. CHAMPS provides teachers with an opportunity to reflect on their own teaching practices, celebrate their successes, and learn how to enhance their skills through teacher-friendly, research-based tools. Teachers will learn how to change classroom variables to enhance behavior and increase student learning for each new group of students they encounter.
