Services Available: Safe & Civil Schools Training Models

These are three basic models or options for training in Safe & Civil Schools materials. In each model, certified Safe & Civil Schools trainers deliver instruction. For additional information on our trainers, click here).

1. Individual Workshops Model

With this "economy" model, you choose one or more topics from the menu of workshops below as a part of a pre-established staff development sequence, or simply to increase staff awareness regarding proactive discipline and positive behavior support. This basic model represents a more traditional (one-shot, no follow-up) approach to staff development and/or school improvement. It is not as comprehensive as the other two models, and therefore it tends to be less costly, however the results may not be as long lasting.

2. Year-long Topic Model

With this "mid-level" model, you focus on a specific area of behavior management (school-wide, classroom, or individual intervention). This option allows school teams or entire staffs to explore the selected topic in more detail. Over the course of one year, we provide four two-day trainings (for a total of eight training days) in the topics listed below. This model enhances the traditional approach to staff development and/or school improvement by creating assignments and self-assessment activities for participants to implement between training sessions. Because it is more comprehensive approach, it tends to cost more than the Individual Workshop Model. However, you will enhance implementation and effectiveness because assignments, follow-up, and repetition of key concepts make it more likely that your staff will use the techniques they learn in eaach workshop.

Possible Tailoring Options

The three training topics can be set up as a sequence and implemented over multiple years. We can add district-level coaching and follow-up to increase implementation effectiveness. If no coaching is involved, this training can be delivered to large numbers of teams. Call or email us to explore how one of these options can be delivered in your district and/or to discuss how we can train in-district personnel to provide coaching to enhance application and transfer of training.


3. Comprehensive Multi-Year Model

With this "luxury" model, you get a three-year training sequence that has a proven track record. Trainings cover the full Safe & Civil Schools program and include training and mentoring of district (or regional service center) coaches. This model features a cohort approach. We begin training with a cohort involving approximately 10-15 schools. Each year, we begin the training of a new cohort. Each cohort receives three full years of training. By the end of the third year, district personnel have been prepared to conduct all planning, training, and coaching—the result of which is full district sustainability after four years. Our experience (and the research on school change) suggests that, with this model, the results have long-lasting potential for the district (or region), beyond the tenure of any specific individual.

Sample Training Sequence—Year 1

Training 1 (Fall): Readiness

A 2-day training with administrators and key building-level decision makers: Introduction; Forming a team; Determining staff readiness

Training 2 (Winter): Getting Started

A 2-day training with the "Foundations Teams": Overview; Vision; Beginning data collection; Teacher's Encyclopedia as a stop-gap help for teachers in their classroom

Training 3 (Spring): Developing a Plan

A 2-day training with the "Foundations Teams": Analyzing data; Identifying a common area for improvement; Assessing team functioning; Determining a process for "Guidelines for Success"

Training 4 (Late Spring or Early Summer): Preparing to Implement

A 2-day training with the "Foundations Teams": Preparing common area lessons; Implementing Guidelines for Success; Classroom management tips for beginning the year (teaching expectations)

Sample Training Sequence—Year 2

Training 1 (Fall): Fine Tuning and Goal Setting

A 2-day training with the "Foundations Teams": Monitoring & adjusting the common area and Guidelines for Success; Identifying another common area, and preparing lessons for January implementation

Training 2 (Winter): Responding to Discipline Problems

A 2-day training with the "Foundations Teams": Introduction to disciplinary referral, CHAMPs Module 7, Year 2 data collection

Training 3 (Spring): Planning for Spring and Fall

A 2-day training with the "Foundations Teams": Analyzing data; Finalizing all common areas; Assessing team functioning and the Guidelines for Success process, CHAMPs for the summer (Modules 1-4)

Training 4 (Summer): Preparing to Implement

A 2-day training with the "Foundations Teams": Generating lessons for all common areas; Introduction to Interventions; Introduction to students' basic needs; Preparing a school safety checklist

Sample Training Sequence—Year 3

Training 1 (Spring): Fine Tuning and Goal Setting

A 2-day training with the "Foundations Teams": Monitoring & adjusting common areas, Guidelines for Success, and disciplinary referral; Structuring Intervention Planning Teams (ITP), Teacher Assistance Team (TAT), School-Wide Assistance Team (SWAT), and Staff/Student Support Team (SST).

Training 2 (Winter): Responding to Discipline Problems

A 2-day training with the "Foundations Teams": Year 3 data collection; CHAMPs (Modules 5 & 8)

Training 3 (Winter): Intervention Planning for the IPTs (Note: In most cases these are not the Foundations Teams)

A 3-day training with the ITPs: Introduction to intervention planning, designing and implementing interventions

Training 4 (Spring): Planning for the Future

A 2-day training with the "Foundations Teams": Planning for sustainability, introduction to interagency collaboration
