DAY 1 Whole-Group Session

RTI for Behavior: Creating a Continuum of Prevention and Intervention
Presented by Randy Sprick

Day one of the workshop is an informative introduction to a comprehensive and positive approach to schoolwide behavior management expectations, classroom management structures, and individual student intervention. Students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs must be addressed to improve learning and social engagement. The major strategies for achieving proactive behavioral support systems for all students in all schools are:

Implementing these strategies (STOIC) at the schoolwide, classroom, and individual levels will help school staff reduce the degree to which misbehavior and apathy create barriers to academic productivity and engagement.

When all staff in the school implement STOIC well, a multitiered system of prevention and intervention is established. This system creates an RTI continuum for behavior and discipline that supports students' social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Learn how to evaluate your current continuum of services (identifying both strengths and areas that need improvement).

Participants leave with specific strategies to implement immediately, an understanding of how self-assessment results can be used to inform training options for the summer, and a vision of a long-term approach to improving behavioral practices.

DAY 2 Breakout Sessions

Please choose only one of the following sessions.

CHAMPS: A Proactive and Positive Approach to Behavior Management.

CHAMPS: A Proactive and Positive Approach to Classroom Management (K-8)
Presented by Kim Marcum

This workshop helps school personnel build a plan for increasing student motivation, improving behavior, and increasing student responsibility. Participants will learn basic principles of classroom management, behavior management, and an instructional approach to discipline.

Learn how to use rules effectively, reduce off-task behavior, motivate students with positive feedback, teach students to behave in a mature and responsible manner, and much more.

Participants will conduct a self-assessment of their current level of implementation of a variety of classroom management strategies. For those strategies that can be improved, participants will develop a plan for implementing them in their classroom to improve student behavior. In addition, participants will develop a plan for using the CHAMPS book to establish a continuous improvement cycle.

Interventions: Evidence-Based Behavioral Strategies for Individual Students (K-12)
Presented by Elizabeth Winford

Interventions: Evidence-Based Behavioral Strategies for Individual Students This session will explore how to work collaboratively to design and implement interventions for students with chronic behavioral or motivational problems. Participants will learn to design a Behavioral Profile on an individual student and select interventions that have a high probability of helping the student improve his or her behavior. An overview of 16 interventions will be provided. This is not a classroom management session—the focus is on developing a plan for an individual student.

Upon completion of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe a process for organizing information about a student to create a Behavioral Profile for use in designing a function-based intervention plan for an individual student.
  • Identify and describe six early-stage interventions for individual students that can be implemented by all teachers.
  • Identify twelve highly structured interventions that can be designed and implemented collaboratively by educational teams (general educators, special educators, counselors, school psychologists).

Notes

Sessions run from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

In addition to session handouts, you will receive a copy of CHAMPS or Interventions, depending on the breakout session for which you register.
